"They Threw Grenades at Us": Sofiia’s Story
“They threw grenades at us — to make it feel real.”
That’s how Sofia describes her “training” at a Russian so-called “youth camp.”
There, she and nearly a thousand other Ukrainian children were forced to dig trenches, handle grenades, and dismantle rifles under the supervision of Wagner instructors. Those who refused to follow orders were beaten. After three weeks, Sofia received a “training certificate” — an enlistment document for the Russian army.
This is not education. It’s the militarization of abducted children — a violation of international law and a weaponization of childhood itself.
Russia calls these programs “patriotic youth camps.” In reality, they are designed to erase identity, instill fear, and prepare minors for war.
At Save Ukraine, we work every day to locate, rescue, and rehabilitate children like Sofia — helping them recover from trauma and rebuild their future in safety.
