Why children decide to shorten their own lives
The most important thing for us adults to remember is that children never just decide to commit suicide on their own. Their environment always pushes them to this step. Therefore, our first task is to provide a healthy, non-toxic environment for our children to exist in, where they can always find understanding and support.
Those problems that arise in teenagers often seem to adults to be small and not worth paying attention to. And if we help our children to cope with them, after a certain time they will be just as trivial for them. In the meantime, we have no right to devalue, ridicule, and despise any children’s problems.
Such reasons may include:
- Teenagers can have inner feelings that no one understands them, no one is interested in them, or that they cannot control their own life.
- Lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem, feelings of incompetence.
- Domestic violence, bullying, cyberbullying by peers and adults.
- Moving, divorce of parents, death of a loved one, and other stressful situations.
- Interest in experimentation, risky behavior. Easy access to deadly weapons.
- Alcohol and drug use. Depression, anxiety disorders, and other mental illnesses.
- Forced resettlement, loss of parents’ jobs, decrease in living standards, separation from friends and relatives.
Psychological assistance to war-affected children is one of Save Ukraine’s most important tasks after we help families evacuate from dangerous areas or return children from deportation. Our psychologists are actively working with children to prevent even greater disaster.
