From survival to rebuilding: Olena and Vika’s story
In Ukraine’s Donetsk region, a shell ripped through the roof of Olena’s house, where she and her 10-year-old daughter Vika were hiding. Miraculously, they survived. Vika was uninjured, but Olena suffered a broken leg. When our evacuation team met them, they had lost all their possessions and had no place to go.
We transferred them to our Hope and Healing Center in Irpin, where they received medical care, stable shelter, and—most importantly—a safe environment to begin again.
Recovery did not stop there. Once Olena regained her strength, she joined our team as a case manager, helping other families who experienced the same trauma she and Vika endured. Who better to support parents than a mother who knows what it means to protect her child in war?
Today, Vika is smiling and taking part in community activities. Olena is working, rebuilding her future, and dreaming again. Challenges remain — from housing to medical follow-up — but they no longer face them alone.
At Save Ukraine, we know that protection is just the first step. True recovery means helping families move from survival to stability and leadership.
