From silence to the stage: Diana’s journey
When 8-year-old Diana first came to our Hope and Healing Center, she barely spoke. She avoided eye contact, hesitated to raise her hand even when she knew the answer, and felt overwhelmed in any unfamiliar space. The war had taken away not only her sense of safety — it had also quieted her voice.
Through steady work with our speech therapist and psychologist, Diana gradually began to trust again. She learned to ask questions, share her thoughts, and connect with other children. Week by week, her posture changed, her confidence grew, and the shy girl who once hid behind adults started smiling openly.
A few weeks later, her transformation became undeniable. Diana discovered her love for performing — and this autumn she sang on stage at her school’s talent contest. Moments like these remind us why early support matters: every small step is a profound shift in a child’s life.
Children who come to Save Ukraine carry different experiences and needs. Some require educational support, others emotional recovery or help rebuilding social skills. But each child brings a unique world of strengths and potential. Our work is to help that potential emerge.
Through the EMPOWER program, Diana is catching up academically, rebuilding confidence, and experiencing what every child deserves — the chance to grow, express herself, and belong.
EMPOWER : Education, Mental Health, Protection and Opportunities for Well-being and Resilience is implemented by Save Ukraine in partnership with Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe.
