Art as a Weapon: a Ukrainian tragedy takes the world’s premier opera stage
In New York, Save Ukraine founder Mykola Kuleba joined Peter Gelb, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera, for a joint interview on NY1 to discuss a groundbreaking project: the opera “The Mothers of Kherson.”
The Met typically keeps its new productions under wraps until opening night. But this time is different. Peter Gelb is firm: the world cannot afford to forget what is happening in Ukraine. In an unprecedented move, the theater has already shared the first excerpts of the work to remind the international community of the thousands of children stolen by Russia.
This opera is a testament to superhuman courage. It is based on the harrowing, real-life stories of mothers who, braving terror and danger, crossed front lines and endured FSB interrogations to rescue their children from deportation. These are the stories the Save Ukraine team witnesses firsthand during every rescue mission.
This is more than music; it is a powerful form of resistance. Art reaches those who may remain unmoved by the dry statistics of reports. it is the voice of our children who remain trapped behind a new “Iron Curtain” in occupied territories.
The opera’s global journey begins soon:
🔘 June: Kyiv
🔘 October: Warsaw
🔘 Next Season: New York Premiere at the Metropolitan Opera
Our deepest gratitude to Peter Gelb for his solidarity and for his courage to speak the truth on the world’s most prestigious stage.
