International Day for People of African Descent
The International Day for People of African Descent, celebrated annually on August 31st, was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2020 to recognize the contributions of people of African descent around the world and to promote the protection of their rights. This day is part of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015–2024), which aims to address the issues of justice, recognition, and development for people of African descent globally.
People of African descent have made significant contributions to every aspect of society, including art, science, politics, and culture, yet they often face discrimination, racism, and exclusion. This day seeks to combat these challenges by raising awareness about the systemic barriers faced by African-descended communities and advocating for equality, inclusion, and recognition of their rights.
On this day, governments, organizations, and communities worldwide hold events, discussions, and cultural celebrations to highlight the history, resilience, and achievements of people of African descent. The day also emphasizes the importance of dismantling structures of racism and ensuring equal opportunities for African-descended individuals in education, employment, and social participation.
The International Day for People of African Descent is a call to action for all to recognize the inherent dignity of African-descended people and to work towards a more just and inclusive society that celebrates diversity.
