Global Media and Information Literacy Week
Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week, observed annually from October 24th to 31st, was established by UNESCO to promote the critical skills needed for individuals to engage effectively with media and information in today’s digital age. Media and information literacy is essential for empowering individuals to think critically, assess the credibility of sources, and participate actively in society. It is key to combatting misinformation, disinformation, and fostering informed and inclusive communities.
As the digital landscape expands, individuals are increasingly exposed to a variety of media content, making it vital for people to develop the skills to navigate, interpret, and responsibly use this information. Global MIL Week emphasizes the importance of teaching media and information literacy to young people and adults alike, promoting responsible digital citizenship, and encouraging ethical journalism practices.
Each year, the week focuses on a specific theme, such as promoting digital literacy in education, supporting freedom of expression, or fostering inclusive digital communities. Governments, educational institutions, and media organizations participate by hosting workshops, conferences, and educational campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of media and information literacy.
Global MIL Week serves as a reminder of the power of informed citizens in democratic societies and highlights the role of media literacy in ensuring that people have the skills to critically engage with media and information, promoting equality and respect for all.
