Life shattered by a bomb: the story of the Afanasiev family
“On June 5, a guided aerial bomb hit our home. Rescuers began to pull us out from under the rubble…,” recalls Angela with pain. Under that rubble, her husband lost his life. Three-year-old Maksym suffered a concussion, her mother, Marharyta Petrovna, sustained a contusion and multiple injuries, and Angela herself fractured her pelvis.
The Afanasiev family had recently finished paying off the mortgage for their home in Kostiantynivka. “We had just paid off the loan, and now, in an instant, our home was destroyed,” she says, unable to hold back her tears. The war completely devastated the peaceful and happy life they had built.
While Angela was in the hospital, she started looking for a way to move her family to a safer place. Fortunately, she reached out to the Save Ukraine team.
Our volunteers helped the family evacuate to Kyiv, our Hope and Healing Center. Angela, Marharyta Petrovna, and little Maksym received essential medicines, food, clothing, and hygiene products here. The specialists also assisted them in restoring their lost documents. A month and a half later, they were offered a chance to move into a modular home in Kolomyia through the Fort Home program.
Today Angela and her family live in a warm, cozy home. They have found support in the local community and are slowly rebuilding their lives.
“Thank you for the wonderful home. It’s warm, cozy, and comfortable,” happily says Angela. Our team is proud that, through our collective efforts, another Ukrainian family is on the path to recovery. This means Ukraine has a future!
