Remarkable transformations in 16-year-old Anya from Kharkiv
Anya, a 16-year-old girl from Kharkiv, saw her carefree life shattered when her school was bombed.
In the early days of the full-scale war, Anya and her mother sought refuge from the intense shelling wherever they could. Her friends evacuated the town, leaving her isolated for months, devoid of a social life and regular education, including online learning. Although teachers sent assignments, the lack of clear explanations made it difficult for the children to keep up. Her phone became Anya’s only source of comfort. Additionally, her family faced financial struggles due to the war.
When Anya joined our Community Center in Kharkiv, she was initially reserved, hesitant to show her emotions, and often silent. However, as time passed, our educators began to notice her curiosity and talent. The war, coupled with a lack of opportunities, stability, and financial resources, had affected her self-esteem, leading her to doubt her own abilities.
The Save Ukraine Community Center welcomed her, offering the attention and care she needed. She eventually moved in with her grandmother in Kharkiv to be closer to it. After a year of comprehensive support—psychological, social, and educational—Anya experienced a significant transformation.
At the Community Center, she made genuine friends and joined a music group as a drummer. She resumed her education, catching up on missed classes and preparing for higher education. Anya also tapped into her creative side, making videos and starting a TikTok account for our Community Center in Kharkiv.
We believe this is just the start of a series of wonderful developments and opportunities in Anya’s life. Our team remains committed to supporting her and other young Ukrainians as they work to overcome the impacts of the war and move forward with their lives.
