Without medication in Donbas: the story of Mykola and Lyudmila
70-year-old Mykola sustained shrapnel wounds and a concussion during the shelling of Avdiivka. However, he and his wife, who also suffered from chronic illnesses, couldn’t get proper medical care in the midst of the war zone.
The elderly couple got married right before the full-scale war. This event was supposed to rejuvenate their youth and mark the beginning of a new happy stage of life in their twilight years. Instead, Mykola and Lyudmila had to fight for their lives. For six months, they sought refuge in bomb shelters from Russian airstrikes and phosphorus attacks. Throughout this time, they had no access to food, medicine, medical, and humanitarian aid.
Fortunately, Save Ukraine volunteers evacuated the couple from Avdiivka to our center for people with limited mobility in Irpin. Here, we provided them with psychological and medical assistance, three meals a day, necessary living essentials, and simply human support. Today, Mykola, Lyudmila, and their dog finally feel peace and are returning to normal life.
