Valentyn ended up in the home for the elderly with almost nothing – pants, a shirt, shoes, and a few personal items were all that remained from his past life. As soon as he stepped into our center, he asked for a simple warm soup, having survived on canned food for half a year.
Our Save Ukraine team evacuated Valentyn from Zaporizhzhia to the center for the elderly. He had lived in Zaporizhzhia all his life, but with the onset of full-scale war, he became ‘imprisoned’ in his own apartment. Being immobile and in need of care, staying in a frontline city was dangerous.
In our center, experts helped Valentyn obtain an internally displaced person’s certificate and pension. When Valentyn had managed to earn his own funds, he started planning for the future. He was placed in a geriatric institution, and necessary health documents were processed. After stabilizing his physical condition, a ticket to Hannover for permanent residence was purchased. Thanks to our partners, facilities were arranged for people requiring constant care.
Valentyn’s story mirrors millions of others, where people find themselves in dire situations, left alone with their problems and unable to simply survive. However, with the full support of World Jewish Relief, our Save Ukraine team has a comprehensive care system for the elderly and immobile people, allowing them to restore their physical and emotional well-being, along with obtaining all necessary documents. These services are provided for a month at our two centers for the elderly, after which we find shelters that offer care, warmth, and comfort – essential for immobile and elderly people.
