Overcoming own fears: the story of 11-year-old Valia
Due to her father’s illness, the family of 11-year-old Valia was in a difficult situation. Dad became very aggressive during the worsening, which caused the girl and her mother to move to her grandmother’s house to feel safe. In addition, Dad’s illness required regular expenses for treatment, and the only source of income was Mom’s modest salary, who worked as a nurse in a hospital. Therefore, the family often had nothing to eat, let alone buy a good laptop for Valia’s online studying.
Fortunately, the neighbors asked social workers to pay attention to this family and help them. That’s how we met Valia and her mother. And, seeing the difficult conditions in which the family lives, we decided to take it under the care of our foundation.
Valia started attending the Save Ukraine Community Center. It wasn’t easy to get in touch with the girl at first. But eventually, with the support of psychologists and teachers, she opened up. We presented her with a bicycle so it would be easier for Valia to get to the center. She also made friends and became interested in mathematics, logic, and robotics here.
Now Valia is smiling and open. She attends clubs, meetings for teenagers, and online lessons at school. We also presented the girl with a tablet, which allowed her to keep up with the school curriculum. But most importantly, thanks to classes at the center, she realized there is no risk of “being like dad” for her. After all, every person is unique and deserves a decent life.
Valia’s story is a bright example of how support can change a child’s life. We are grateful to everyone who joins the charity. And we call everybody to feel free to ask for help.
