“I’m just grateful to be alive”: Kateryna’s Story
Today, Kateryna she is deeply thankful to Save Ukraine — for the roof over her head, the safety she feels, and the peace that finally allows her to sleep at night.
But not long ago, she lived through absolute horror. Russian soldiers stormed her home, forced her and others into a basement — and then set it on fire. Miraculously, a Ukrainian soldier rescued them, leading the group through the woods under fire. Her husband was wounded and told her, “Run, Kateryna…” She lost consciousness.
After fleeing war, losing her home, surviving the fire, and recovering in the hospital, Kateryna was evacuated by Save Ukraine to the Hope and Healing Center for the elderly and people with limited mobility in Irpin.
There, she received medical care, psychological support, and help restoring her documents. Today, thanks to our team, she has a new home in the Hansen Community — a peaceful, safe space where she can start over.
It’s a powerful reminder of what it means to be given a second chance at life.
With sincere thanks to LandsAid, Aktion Deutschland Hilft, and all our partners who make these rescue stories possible.
