Escaping the war twice: the story of Nataliia Zelenska
Nataliia’s family had to escape from the war twice. The first time, in 2014, they had to leave their hometown, Stakhaniv, in the Luhansk region and move to Beryslav, the Kherson region, where their parents lived. And the second time — in February 2022, when Beryslav was also under occupation.
It was hard to live under the Russian occupation. Russians conducted constant checks in the city and put pressure on those who did not send their children to Russian schools. The occupiers gave the family an ultimatum — two weeks to educate the children according to the Russian program or deportation. Leaving alone was scary because of the shelling. They were thinking about leaving the town but were afraid.
After the liberation of Beryslav, occupiers began to shell daily because the city was across the Dnipro from them. Every day could be the last. Fortunately, Save Ukraine fund volunteers came to the town and offered the family to move to a safer place.
On January 15, 2023, the family came to one of our Hope and Healing centers, where they could recover both psychologically and physically. After three months, the family was provided a modular house under the Fort Home program in a safe area with a school and everything needed for a peaceful life.
When Nataliia’s family was in our center, a personal case manager supported them all the time. He knew about all the family’s needs and helped solve all urgent issues. It was the case manager who helped the parents find a job in Chernivtsi. And now the family is planning to move to a new place.
“Thank you, Save Ukraine, for your help!” Nataliia says sincerely. “You helped us start a new life.”
Together, we are stronger! Let’s support those who suffered from the war.
