How to help a child trust again after occupation: European diplomats visit Save Ukraine center
How can we free a child from imposed beliefs? How do we restore their trust in people and help them think critically about Russian propaganda? These were the questions raised by European ambassadors who recently visited the Save Ukraine Recovery Center.
Every child we rescue from Russian occupation or from Russia itself is living proof of an extraordinary fight — for their identity, culture, language, and beliefs. Many of the children currently undergoing rehabilitation at Save Ukraine have endured threats of family separation, interrogations, home searches, and document inspections. They lived in constant fear of punishment — simply for attending Ukrainian online school, speaking their native language, or expressing “unacceptable” opinions about the war.
Some were forcibly separated from their families and sent to military training camps. Each of these children is a witness to war crimes. Many were silenced under threat — told their parents would be tortured if they spoke out.
All the children rescued by Save Ukraine carry deep psychological wounds. That’s why we’ve developed a unique recovery model to help them rebuild trust, regain a sense of safety, and learn to live without fear. We are ready to share this approach so that more communities in Ukraine and across Europe can support children in healing from the trauma of war.
We are deeply grateful to the diplomats from Austria, the United States, Denmark, Slovenia, Canada, Finland, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, Albania, Malta, Montenegro, and North Macedonia for their support. And to everyone who stands with us in saving children and restoring their right to a peaceful childhood — thank you. Together, we’re dismantling the lies of Russian propaganda.
