How parents can prevent teenage suicide
Unfortunately, cases of teenage suicide in Ukraine are repeated. Just yesterday, the bodies of two dead people were found in Kyiv. Therefore, we adults have no right to delay. We must help our children to cope with their problems in order to protect them from reckless steps.
First of all, pay attention to your child’s behavior. If they withdraw, show apathy, and aggressiveness, and change their eating habits, and sleep patterns, their performance at school has decreased, and at home, they refuse their favorite classes and other activities, and they’re constantly depressed, this may be a sign of the child’s problems.
In such a case, you CANNOT:🔹 to provoke, mock, threaten;🔹 to tell about people who tried to commit suicide;🔹 discuss methods of suicide with the child;🔹 to teach children, to encourage them to have heavy thoughts about their loved ones.
Instead, psychologists advise following these recommendations:🔸 Respect your child. Talk to them kindly.🔸 Create an environment in the family in which the child will feel comfortable, where no one will judge them.🔸 Show interest in the child’s life and problems. Plan together the near and further future.🔸 Spend breakfasts, lunches, dinners together. Discuss with the child their current problems.🔸 Limit access to lethal items. Make sure firearms and other potentially lethal items are securely stored or out of reach of teenagers.
❗️Talk to your teen about the importance of mental health and how to maintain it. Encourage seeking professional help when necessary. Tell them how to contact the psychological service.
❗️If the child wants to talk to you, put aside all your business. Let them speak, don’t interrupt, just listen.
⚠️ DEAR ADULTS, REMEMBER that teenagers who lack parental attention and support are at risk of teenage suicide. Pay more attention to your children in all circumstances.
