How Save Ukraine’s Community Centers transform children’s lives
Fear, uncertainty, anxiety, lost trust in the world, and shattered dreams—these are common challenges faced by children who have endured the horrors of war. To make matters worse, many children in occupied and frontline areas suffer from significant educational gaps due to limited or nonexistent access to schooling.
At Save Ukraine’s Community Centers, our primary focus is helping children recover from these educational setbacks through the Safe Access to Equitable and Inclusive Education in Ukraine project co-funded by the EU. This program provides children with additional lessons in math and the Ukrainian language while also engaging them in creative activities.
At the same time, our psychologists work to restore children’s self-confidence, resilience, and belief in a brighter future. The result? Inspiring stories of young victors who, with care and support, have transformed their present and future. Here are just a few of their stories:
🌟 Stepan, a participant at the Island of Hope Community Center in Yuzhne, caught up with his school curriculum through Catch-Up classes. Beyond academic improvement, he has become more confident, achieving higher grades, engaging more with peers, and developing leadership skills that have earned him the respect of other children.
🌟 Myshko, a child attending the Successful Step Community Center in Korostyshiv, faced immense emotional challenges after losing his father to the war. He became withdrawn and passive, losing interest in learning. Thanks to the center’s lessons and support, Myshko has regained his enthusiasm for education, actively participates in class, and confidently tackles challenges.
🌟 Maxym and Sofiia, twins, each faced unique struggles. Maxym lacked confidence, often giving up easily and expecting others to complete his tasks. Sofiia developed an overprotective instinct toward her brother. After joining a Community Center, Maxym gained independence and self-belief, while Sofiia learned to enjoy activities without constantly feeling responsible for her brother.
🌟 Liliia, a 13-year-old girl, had to leave her home due to the occupation. When she first arrived at a Community Center in Hatne, she was tense, unable to express her needs or ask for help. With additional classes and psychological support, Liliia not only caught up academically but also found encouragement, self-belief, and new friends.
🌟 Nadiia learned about the Island of Hope Community Center from her teacher. Initially, she struggled in the Catch-Up classes. However, with time, she caught up with her school curriculum, improved her problem-solving skills, and even began helping her classmates. The kindness and care she experienced at the center helped her feel valued and confident.
These stories of our young victors inspire us and reaffirm that compassion and support from caring individuals can bring about miracles and transform lives.
