Art Therapy: Rebuilding Resilience in War-Affected Children
One of the first questions children ask when they join our art therapy sessions is: “What if I can’t draw?”
The answer from our psychologists is always the same: “This is not about grades or talent. Here, you can simply try.”
At Save Ukraine, we work with children who have endured the trauma of war, displacement, and separation from loved ones. Traditional talk therapy is not always accessible for them — many emotions are too overwhelming or too difficult to put into words. That is where art therapy becomes one of the most effective tools for recovery.
🎨 Drawing and painting help children express emotions they cannot verbalize.
👐 Clay modeling allows them to release anger or anxiety while regaining a sense of control.
🏖️ Sand therapy provides a safe environment to process trauma through stories and symbolic play.
📖 Storytelling and fairy tales give children a voice to share their inner struggles in a way that feels less intimidating.
These are not just creative activities. They are evidence-based therapeutic methods that help children stabilize, build resilience, and take their first steps toward healing.
As experts working daily with rescued and vulnerable children, we see how these approaches create a safe space where children can breathe again, reconnect with themselves, and begin to dream of a future.
This initiative is part of the Children’s Resilience Fund, implemented by Save Ukraine with the support of Crown Agents and Integrity Action.
👉 Every child has the right not only to survive war, but to heal from it. Art therapy is one of the ways we make that possible.
