World Cleanup Day
World Cleanup Day, celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September, is a global movement that mobilizes millions of volunteers in over 190 countries to participate in cleaning up litter and waste from their local communities. Initiated in 2008 by the Estonian organization Let’s Do It!, the day aims to tackle the global waste crisis by removing garbage from streets, rivers, forests, beaches, and other natural environments, while also raising awareness about the importance of responsible waste management.
The day brings together people from all walks of life to take collective action for the health of the planet. Volunteers, organizations, and governments work together to clean up illegal dumpsites, plastic waste, and other pollutants that harm ecosystems and contribute to environmental degradation. World Cleanup Day also promotes sustainable living practices, recycling, and reducing single-use plastics to prevent future pollution.
Each year, World Cleanup Day highlights the growing problem of waste pollution and calls for long-term solutions to address the underlying causes. The day emphasizes the importance of environmental stewardship, community engagement, and global collaboration in tackling the waste crisis.
On this day, people are encouraged to take part in local cleanup efforts, whether by organizing or joining a cleanup event in their community, or by spreading awareness about the need for better waste management practices. World Cleanup Day serves as a reminder that everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment and creating a cleaner, more sustainable planet.
