International Day of Nowruz
The International Day of Nowruz, celebrated annually on March 21st, marks the beginning of the Persian New Year and the arrival of spring. Recognized by the United Nations in 2010, Nowruz is an ancient festival with over 3,000 years of history, observed by millions of people across several countries, including Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Central Asia, and parts of the Balkans. The word “Nowruz” means “new day” in Persian, symbolizing renewal, rejuvenation, and the start of a new cycle.
Nowruz is a time for families and communities to come together, share meals, and engage in cultural rituals that emphasize themes of harmony, peace, and connection to nature. It is often celebrated with various traditions such as spring cleaning, decorating homes, and setting up a table known as “Haft-Seen,” which includes seven symbolic items that represent health, prosperity, and happiness.
The International Day of Nowruz aims to promote the values of mutual respect, cultural diversity, and the celebration of life, while also encouraging dialogue and understanding between different communities. It emphasizes Nowruz’s role in fostering peace and unity across diverse cultures and ethnic groups, reminding the world of the importance of cultural heritage in building bridges between people.
