International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste
The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, celebrated annually on September 29th, was established by the United Nations in 2019 to highlight the critical issue of food loss and waste and to encourage actions toward reducing it. Globally, about one-third of all food produced is either lost or wasted, which has severe environmental, economic, and social consequences. This day emphasizes the importance of sustainable food systems and the need for more responsible production and consumption practices.
Food loss refers to the reduction in the quantity or quality of food during production, post-harvest handling, and storage, while food waste occurs at the retail and consumer levels. Reducing food loss and waste not only addresses hunger but also contributes to fighting climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from food waste in landfills.
On this day, governments, organizations, and individuals are encouraged to take part in discussions, campaigns, and activities aimed at raising awareness of the importance of minimizing food loss and waste. The day also promotes the adoption of innovative solutions, improved storage techniques, and changes in consumer behavior to reduce food waste.
The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste serves as a reminder that reducing food waste is a shared responsibility and that everyone can contribute to building a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient food system.
